Channeling the magical love of storytelling of early American writers like Kate Chopin and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Reasons for the Fall follows a trio of aimless, romantic and wealthy friends on a summer vacation to Saugatuck, an enchanted and bohemian town snuggled alongside the dunes of Lake Michigan. This volume also includes three short stories which travel from the sandy Great Lakes coast to the mind of an enchanted old woman, to a personal narrative by the author and, across the solar system, to the cold surface of one of Jupiter's mysterious moons.

This work consists of a short novel and three short stories.Writing itself is good, the author obviously masters the language (a few typos have escaped proofreading, especially at the beginning) and he is able to create fine and imaginative sentences.
He chooses a perilous path though.
The three characters of the main story, young, beautiful and wealthy, breeze through life, forced here and there to take momentous decisions, but usually musing about purpose or lack thereof. I could never connect to them. Not once, not for a second, I was worried for them, felt for them, loved them. They were less than strangers dimmed to my awareness by a flowery language probably meant to be meaningful but which only distanced them from me further.
Plotless stories must make up for the lack of action by depth of feeling and or stunning literary beauty and despite the many nice turns of phrase I could not find any. The sad ending was completely unwarranted for. What was the aim here? To convey the idea that we drift through life without purpose, the little we manage to gather for ourselves easily blown away by the random wind gust? If so it has been done before and better.
The three short stories share more or less the same issues and perhaps even more lack of appeal. I wish I had my time back.

Reasons for the Fall Greg Schumaker 9781435721111 Books Reviews
This book was a great read! I could not put it down!
The author smoothly held my attention the entire time!
i highly recommend this, a great beach read!
'Reasons for the Fall' was a delight to read. I found myself smiling at the generous sprinkles of subtle humor. An entertaining fast read. The additional bonus stories (Dinner for Buddha, Decaffeinated and Jupiter) were enjoyable, but not as much fun as 'Reasons for the Fall'.
This book should be read even if just for the quotes and the word pictures you can pull from it. I only read the novel part but I hung on the beautiful writing. This author is a poet writing a story in prose. But the poetry is evident on every page. Actually, his prose writing is often more beautiful than the poetry written/discussed/spoken.
I think of comparing him to Neil Gaiman in this respect Read for the quotes and the thoughts and the pictures in your mind. The tale itself is puffy and fanciful and flighty and has a strange ending, as if the author just ran out of things to do with his characters. But meanwhile the characters danced.
The writing is fantastic. The sound of the words ripples like a stream or flies softly. It captured me. A friend told me people don't read books for the sounds of the words. *smile - that's what he thinks.*
I admit the characters stayed rather one dimensional and I cared little what happened to them. But I wasn't really sure the novel was about the characters anyway.
What I did like are sentences like these
Every unopened door is a curiosity, not an object of absolute fear.
He let his left hand slide into Bill's right, and there they fell asleep until the sun came crawling back the next morning, sorrowful, apologetic for leaving the night before.
Or a phrase
a calamity of footsteps
Or a paragraph like this
Harper had then realized that this, this ridiculous meeting and drinking and talking, was seduction. He had been seduced. He retuned the kiss, breathing in heavily through his nostrils in order to feed his hungry and nervous heart. The stubble of their upper lips began to scratch at one another. "It kind of hurts," Harper whispered out of the corner of his mouth, not wanting to stop kissing, learning to enjoy the burn.
